Mysterious Vessel New Jersey: 100-Year-Old Vessel Could Be A Barge, Or The Skeleton Of An Old Ship

A mysterious vessel found on a New Jersey beach could be an “historical find.” According to ABC News, the uncovered remnants of a vessel — believed to be 100-years-old — could simply be an old barge. Or they could be the skeleton of a ship that crashed on to a sandbar in the area back in 1850. Many are eager to find out just what the discovery is.

The boat pieces were found during a construction job that has been ongoing for months. A steel wall is being erected along the coastline in the area to keep the ocean from entering the town in severe weather. The project came to a halt when one of the drilling machines hit something deep in the sand.

“I was shocked. I thought it was kind of cool that a ship from the 1850s was 20 feet under the sand,” said John Ducey, the mayor of Brick.

The mysterious vessel could really be anything. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is being cautious when it comes to speculation, but does admit that the vessel’s “peg-like construction” dates it pre-1900s. Many in the area believe that there are more pieces under the sand, and that they may have stumbled on an old shipwreck.

According to NBC Philadelphia, “ground-penetrating radar” will be used to determine what else — if anything — might be under the sand at Normandy Beach. Officials say that the steel wall will still be finished before winter.

“After determining the mystery object’s historical value and whether it needs to be dug up, DEP spokesman Bob Considine said the steel wall protection project will be finished, essentially on time and before winter weather sets in.”

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, amazing things are always popping up, and many of these things come by way of the ocean. Back in 2012, a man found a 98-year-old message in a bottle. Inside the bottle was a postcard, which asked the finder to report the discovery and even offered a reward. Of course whoever sent off that message was long gone by the time it was found.

“As we hauled in the nets I spotted the bottle neck sticking out and I quickly grabbed it before it fell back in the sea. It was very exciting to find the bottle and I couldn’t wait to open it. It’s like winning the lottery twice. This is a fascinating record, both historically and scientifically. We hope that future expeditions will retrieve more of these treasured messages from the sea.”
