‘Doctor Who’ Season 8 Finale Spoilers: Missy’s Next Move and The Doctor and Clara’s Relationship

The first part of the Doctor Who Season 8 Finale, “Dark Water,” ended with Missy revealing who she really is to the Doctor as Cybermen marched on London. All season, there were only glimpses of her at the ends of episodes, but with the two-part finale, the focus moves to her and her plans – and it seems that the Doctor’s statement that he and Clara would go to “hell” or wherever Danny was is very accurate.

In the most recent Doctor Who episode, Missy introduced herself to Peter Capaldi’s character as a welcome droid and gave him the welcome package to 3W by pinning him to the wall and kissing him. Michelle Gomez spoke to Entertainment Weekly about playing Missy and that scene.

“It was like kissing the Glaswegian version of David Bowie. Well, it was Hell on Earth, really. And I say it was Hell on Earth, only because obviously Missy would have liked to have taken it further. In fact, she had to pull herself together. That was the hellish part. But maybe it will be revealed in this final episode.”

In the episode’s final scene, Missy stood by and watched as Cybermen marched on London and stopped the Doctor as he tried to get everyone to run. That was when she revealed who she really is, as previously reported by the Inquisitr. Missy is “short for Mistress. Couldn’t very well keep calling myself the Master, now, could I?” She asked. Missy is ready to bring Hell to Earth, using the dead, as you can see in the promo for “Death in Heaven” below.

The Mirror has posted photos from the finale teasing the Doctor, Missy and Cybermen in a graveyard and Missy frustrated with the Doctor. The key art for the episode shows a Cyberman bursting out of the ground.

The Doctor finding out that Missy is The Master isn’t the only thing that happened in the first part that needs to be addressed in the second part of the Doctor Who Season 8 Finale. Danny was hit by a car and killed while on the phone with Clara, and Clara showed just how far she was willing to go to convince the Doctor to bring him back as she threw the TARDIS keys into the only thing that would destroy them: lava. Well, she at least thought she did, as it turned out the Doctor tricked her, but she was still willing to go that far. The finale’s director, Rachel Talalay, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what this means for the Doctor and Clara’s relationship.

“It’s so interesting. What was amazing was, the depth of Steven’s writing – and you’ll find this in episode 12 as well. There are certain scenes between Clara and the Doctor where every line has seven meanings. And you have these really substantive actors who can do so many things with that. …The fandom is interesting because sometimes they say Clara is too big, and too important, [but] I think it balances beautifully in these episodes. It’s nice to have a companion who is strong, and flawed, and more rounded.”

As Jenna Coleman puts it in the Inside Look at the Doctor Who episode, “Dark Water,” below, “I think it’s probably the first time that we see a companion properly go mad and lose their mind effectively.”

Doctor Who Season 8 ends Saturday at 9 p.m. on BBC America.
