This week’s episode of The Vampire Diaries saw Elena taking her own advice and, after choosing not to remember her relationship with Damon, going to the corn maze with Liam. Just as she seemed to be moving on the best she could, Damon returned and reunited with his brother. Now the question of whether she’ll remember how she feels about Damon is something that has to be addressed. Executive producer Caroline Dries spoke to TV Guide about Damon and Elena’s future, what’s happening to Bonnie with Kai, and more.
While Elena has told Alaric she doesn’t want him to break the compulsion, is it possible that seeing Damon again will move that along for her? Where does that leave she and Liam? She did kiss the guy after witnessing him saving people at the corn maze with his medical knowledge, not an easy save of giving someone blood, like she did in the latest Vampire Diaries episode. According to Dries, that’s all part of Elena’s struggle.
“Can their love break through the compulsion? Will she look at him and fall back in love because it’s him? Will she run for the hills? …It’s a test [of] their relationship as a couple and it’s a huge hurdle they’ll have to overcome. Is it possible to start fresh? Or will she just remember him as the guy who killed her brother?… He really did all of those things. So it’s her giving herself a reality check at this time in her life when she’s doing well in school and she has this cool guy Liam.”
As you can see in the promo for the next TVD episode, “The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get,” not only will the others have to stage a rescue mission for Enzo (and Damon), Elena will also be dealing with knowing that Damon is back, while he’s facing the fact that she doesn’t remember their relationship.
Elena’s not the only one who is going to be struggling now that Damon is back. While Stefan seemed to be putting on a brave face and trying to start over and move on, rather than track down dead end leads to find his brother, as others have pointed out in these first five episodes of The Vampire Diaries Season 6, Elena witnessed first hand how much he’s been suffering and Stefan’s speech in the crypt in “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here” is the perfect example that he is, as he said, “lost.” The executive producer teased that just because Stefan has his brother back doesn’t mean everything else falls back into place for him.
“We really tried to get Stefan to his lowest point right before Damon came back… so he’s going to be thrilled Damon is back but there’s still a lot he needs to clean up. He made a bit of a mess in his life after Damon left and it’ll be picking up the pieces. He made an enemy of Enzo, he ruined his friendship with Caroline, so having Damon back is just one piece of the puzzle in his life.”
While Damon is home again, not everyone is back where they should be on The Vampire Diaries just yet. Bonnie forced Damon to leave her behind when Kai threw a wrench in their plans to leave him in his prison hell they’ve been trapped in and repeating the same day over and over in, as previously reported by the Inquisitr. Dries has said it’s not going to be easy for either of them going forward after what happened.
“Damon believes she was left for dead, so he’s struggling with the guilt of having gotten out when she sacrificed herself for him. With Bonnie left behind with Kai we’ll see basically a horror movie for her and she’s desperately trying to find a way out without letting Kia back. It’s this endless bad dream for her.”
As part of Damon’s guilt, he’ll be keeping secret exactly what happened to him so that they don’t have to deal with losing Bonnie all over again. However, as the Vampire Diaries EP teased, they will “become aware” that Bonnie’s alive and their new “mission” will become “to get to her.”
Hopefully they can get to her sooner rather than later – or she can help herself get out of there – because Kai is not someone anyone should be trapped with in a prison hell. However, it is important to keep him from getting out, as Bonnie knows, and there are still quite a few questions about Kai’s motivations and his plans and why he’s trapped in Mystic Falls, as Chris Wood told Entertainment Weekly.
“What are the rules to this world? Is it location-specific in addition to being time-specific? Why is he here in this part of the world? What is his goal besides getting out?”
The Vampire Diaries Season 6 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
