Ferguson Police Chief Denies Rumors That He Plans To Resign

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson has denied rumors that he plans to resign. Jackson’s position with the force has been in question since the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. On August 9, Brown was shot and killed by officer Darren Wilson. Although Wilson claims the teen was killed during a struggle, others believe the shooting was racially motivated.

The incident has become a topic of heated controversy, as Michael Brown was unarmed. Opponents argue that the incident closely resembles the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

In February 2012, Martin, who was unarmed, was shot and killed by a white man. Many argued that Martin was singled out because he was black and was wearing a hoodie. As George Zimmerman was eventually found not guilty, the incident remains the topic of debate.

Michael Brown, a black teen, was also shot and killed by a white man. Although Wilson has strongly defended his actions, the incident has been criticized as racially motivated.

Following the shooting, Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson’s behavior has been under intense scrutiny. In addition to his handling of the investigation, Jackson is criticized for his response to ongoing protests and the lack of racial diversity within the police force.

Although a majority of Ferguson’s citizens are black, “only three of the city’s 53 officers [are] African-American.”

In response to reports of impropriety, the Ferguson City Council has resolved to work with state officials to reform the police department. On Tuesday, the council proposed two resolutions, which would regulate the handling of officer-involved shootings.

On Wednesday, CNN reported that Jackson “is expected to step down” amid efforts to “reform the police department.” Although the sources were not named, the information reportedly came from “government officials familiar with ongoing discussions.”

It is unclear which government sources conveyed the information to CNN. However, the Ferguson police chief said he was not asked to resign, nor does he plan to do so.

Mayor James Knowles III admits the police department and local government have been under intense scrutiny. However, he commended Jackson for displaying strength throughout the controversy. He further confirmed that the police chief was not asked to resign.

As reported by Officer.com, Assistant St. Louis County Police Chief Kenneth Cox also denied the rumors. Cox said he is not aware of any “formal movement” concerning Jackson’s resignation. He underlined the fact that the decision rests in the hands of city officials.

At this time, Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson continues to deny rumors that he plans to resign.
