Arthur Alleyne, ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Movie Ship Captain, Vanishes At Sea In Caribbean Waters

Arthur Alleyne, the real-life captain of a ship that became a movie star when it appeared in three blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean movies, has gone missing along with his wife Sharon as they sailed a 47-foot yacht from St. Lucia to Barbados. The couple’s daughter, Tao Alleyne of south Wales, said the couple was last heard from at about 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

“But what she described as a ‘strange voicemail’ was left on a phone at a local dock in St. Lucia on Sunday afternoon. She said the voices of her parents could be heard faintly in that message, but what they were saying was drowned out by ‘the sound of wind blowing and water lapping.'”

Tao Alleyne said that searchers do not know if the Pirates of the Caribbean captain and his wife were, in fact, “in distress at that time.”

Alleyne is known in the Caribbean sailing community as “Captain Sam.” He was captain of the Brig Unicorn, a ship built in 1948 that has appeared in several Hollywood productions over the years. Before the Pirates of the Caribbean series, the Brig Unicorn doubled as a slave ship in the landmark 1970s TV miniseries Roots.

“In the three ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ movies, the Brig Unicorn — captained by Alleyne — played the role of the Henrietta in the ‘Curse of the Black Pearl’ film, then was called The Terrashaw in the two more ‘Pirates’ films, ‘Dead Man’s Chest’ and ‘At World’s End.'”

But in May of this year, Alleyne was at the helm of the Brig Unicorn as it sailed just off the coast of St. Lucia on is way for some repairs — when the iconic 148-foot ship sank. The cause of the sinking was not certain, but according to reports, the Brig Unicorn simply started to “buckle” when it hit some rough water.

Alleyne and his nine crew members were all rescued unharmed.

His current disappearance is still a mystery. Search aircraft from Barbados and Martinique have been scouring seas for the 47-foot yacht Serenity, but nothing had turned up by Wednesday morning.

The Alleyne couple’s daughter remains convinced that her parents are still alive, but that their vessel may be drifting without power, which was lost during a storm, she believes. The couple each have iPhones, but attempts to track them using the phones’ built-in GPS systems have proved fruitless because the phones appear to be either turned off or also out of power.

The Pirates of the Caribbean Captain, Arthur Alleyne, is 63-years-old and was raised in the Barbados sailing community, his daughter said.
