Off-Duty Officer Returns $120,000 Cash Found On Roadway

An off-duty officer has returned $120,000, which was found on a California roadway. On September 17, the officer spotted two bags in the middle of Concord Boulevard. As she was forced to swerve around the bags, the officer stopped her vehicle to remove them from the roadway. She was stunned to discover the bags were filled with cash.

Although the officer’s name was not revealed, a spokesperson with the California Highway Patrol confirmed she is a sergeant with 20 years on the patrol. When asked what prompted her to return the cash, the sergeant said it is her duty “to uphold the law” and “set the example” for others.

In an official statement, the California Highway Patrol confirmed that the money was released to the Concord Police Department. Thankfully, the owner was identified and the cash was returned.

As reported by The Sacramento Bee, the rightful owner was a 31-year-old man. Although he was not identified by name, authorities said the man had just sold his business and the proceeds were in the bags. He was stunned that the officer returned the $120,000, as he never expected to see it again.

California Highway Patrol Chief Avery Browne said the incident sheds a positive light on the organization and law enforcement officials in general. Browne said officers often refuse any recognition, “as they feel they were simply doing their job.” Although the sergeant wishes to remain anonymous, she will be honored with a commendation in the coming months.

Far too often, the news is saturated with incidents of police brutality and wrongdoing. Unfortunately, the negativity overshadows the fact that law enforcement officials risk their lives on a daily basis to serve and protect the community.

The sergeant’s selfless behavior, even when off-duty, is an important reminder that there are many officers with a strong sense of integrity. Browne said the sergeant deserves recognition for his integrity and honesty.

The officer said some of her friends questioned her decision to return the $120,000. However, for her, the choice was clear and she has no regrets.

As reported by KTVU, the sergeant said she is “happy to hear the rightful owner was identified and that the money has been returned.” She hopes her actions will prompt other officers to make the right decision, whether they are on or off duty.

For the officer, her decision to return the $120,000 was a matter of principle. For the rightful owner, it was a miracle. The unidentified man said the money accounted for his life savings.
