Marvel’s Doctor Strange Role Goes To Benedict Cumberbatch

For month's some of Hollywood's top leading men have been linked to the role of Marvel's Doctor Strange. The list was a who's who of Hollywood and included Joaquin Phoenix, Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Justin Theroux, Tom Hardy, Keanu Reeves and Ethan Hawk.

Hollywood Reporter reports that Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has landed the coveted role. Doctor Strange is slated to be released on July 8, 2016.

Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange casting immediately set Twitter ablaze. Fans went crazy about the choosing of Cumberbatch on several social media sites.

Comic book writer JM DeMatties called the news,"the best comics-to-screen casting since Robert Downey as Iron Man."

Cumberbatch was an early contender, but his busy schedule, which includes theater commitments, were a conflict. When Phoenix dropped out and Marvel decided not to start shooting as soon as they had previously thought, Cumberbatch was suddenly back in the race.

Cumberbatch will bring with him to Doctor Strange extremely large and dedicated fan base. Cumberbatch's fan base strength comes from a combination of his show Sherlock and his highly regarded dramatic reputation.

With The Imitation Game looking to be a big award winner, many see Cumberbatch receiving a best actor nomination.

Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson. Derrickson's credits include Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Deliver Us From Evil.

Hollywood Reporters reports that Doctor Strange the upcoming Marvel movie will focus on the former neurosurgeon as he serves as the Sorcerer Supreme. Doctor Strange is Earth's primary protector against many magical threats.

Doctor Strange will be produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige. It will be written by John Spaihts, who is best known for his works Prometheus and the Darkest Hour. Spaihts replaces the original screenwriters Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly reports

Doctor Strange first appeared in Marvel's universe 50 years ago. The character of Doctor Strange was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The doctor made his debut in Strange Tales No. 110.

The casting of Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange is the smart choice. Cumberbatch is reputed for spending a lot of time research and studying the roles that he plays.

Doctor Strange will be a star figure in a upcoming wave of Marvel's comic-book films. The wave of new movies is scheduled to begin with Ant Man starring Paul Rudd in 2015. Doctor Strange first appeared in Marvel comics in 1963.
