‘Lego Movie’: A Block By Block Rundown Of The Sequel

The writers and directors of The Lego Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, have signed on with Warner Bros to write The Lego Movie sequel.

According to Deadline, it has been an open question of whether they would return beyond producing the sequel, though the question of a continuation of The Lego Movie was really a no brainer. The first film, based solely around the wonder of putting together the ever-popular children’s toy, grossed over $468 million worldwide, and was the third highest grossing film of the year so far.

Warner Bros has already dated the sequel for May 26, 2017. Dan Lin and Roy Lee are producing with Lord and Miller, while Jill Wilfert, Matt Ashton, Chris McKay, and Kara Lord Piersimoni are executive producers. WB’s Greg Silverman, Courtenay Valenti, and Chris Defaria are overseeing.

So far, there’s been no word as to whether or not Will Ferrell will reprise the small role he played in the first Lego Movie, or whether or not the sequel will revolve around the same characters of Emmet (Chris Pratt), WyldStyle (Elizabeth Banks), or even Batman (Will Arnett).

Up until now, any and all rumors surrounding The Lego Move sequel have centered around a possible Lego Batman spinoff movie in 2017 with a full followup Lego Movie sequel in 2018 — but there’s no mention of a Batman film in the Lord and Miller announcement. However, the Will Arnett-voiced character was certainly a fan-favorite part of The Lego Movie, and thus its a good bet that he’ll be in the sequel.

In addition to The Lego Movie, Lord and Miller also directed the sequel 22 Jump Street, which grossed over $319 million worldwide. As such, Lord and Miller are the only writers/directors with two films ranked among the top ten highest grossing features of 2014.

Screenrant points out a fun fact for comic book movie fans. The Lego Movie was the first feature to showcase Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, and The Flash all in the same film — years before the first Justice League movie is set to hit theaters.

The Lego Movie told a story that took place in the Lego universe. The wizard Vitruvius attempts to protect a super-weapon called the Kragle from the evil Lord Business. He fails to do so, but prophesies that a person called the Special will find the Piece of Resistance capable of stopping the Kragle.

Cut to Emmet, an ordinary construction worker who is more than happy with his humdrum life. However, he quickly meets WyldStyle (whose boyfriend happens to be Batman), and the two end up on a journey that will change the Lego universe forever.

Considering the popularity of The Lego Movie with both adults and children, the sequel is sure to be a hit.
