Jeremy Mayfield arrested, charged with drug possession

Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield, who was suspended in 2009 after failing a drug test, was arrested at his home in North Carolina on Tuesday, and is being charged with possession of 1.5 grams of methamphetamine.

In addition to methamphetamine related charges, Mayfield is facing possession of stolen goods charges after police found $100,000 worth of stolen goods from businesses in Lincoln county, the Associated Press reports.

The stolen goods are said to include parts for heavy equipment, welders and welder accessories, an engraving machine and other miscellaneous items that were stolen from two businesses in Lincoln county between late 2010 and early 2011.

Mayfield, 42, posted $3,000 bond on Wednesday and was scheduled to appear in district court on Wednesday. Mayfield’s attorney, Daniel Marino, said in a statement that Mayfield had “no knowledge” of the methamphetamine and the stolen goods.

“Mr. Mayfield has no knowledge of either stolen property or methamphetamine being present on his property and denies the accusation that he was in possession of methamphetamine or any other illegal drug and he denies any suggestion that he knowingly received or possessed stolen property,” Marino said in the statement.

Mayfield’s next hearing is scheduled for January “at the earliest”.
