‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 11 Spoilers: Is There Hope for Callie and Arizona After Therapy?

It’s a heartbreaking time right now on Grey’s Anatomy for Callie and Arizona, who tried to fix their problems by going to therapy and then giving a trial separation a go, but in the end, Callie decided to stop trying. Sara Ramirez has talked to Entertainment Weekly about where that leaves the “Calzona” relationship.

When this week’s Grey’s Anatomy episode first began, after bringing up the issues the couple has faced over the years, Arizona was the one who jumped on board with the idea of the separation. However, while Arizona was looking forward to their future together, Callie was not and instead decided to choose not to keep trying to fix things, as Ramirez told EW.

“What Callie decides is that she doesn’t want to try to fix it or fix them anymore. …It’s not about ‘I don’t want to be with you.’ I think it’s about, ‘I don’t want to try and fix this anymore, and fix us anymore.’ I think Callie reaches her breaking point. …The conclusion that he comes to is they’re better apart, for now.”

Their relationship is up in the air right now on Grey’s, but is there still hope for them? Ramirez says that for now, “Callie basically wants more of that time to be herself again,” so it doesn’t sound very promising. As for Jessica Capshaw’s point of view, she told The Hollywood Reporter that it’s about accepting that things aren’t like they have been.

“Right now, it’s much more a period of accepting that something is forever changed and ultimately not going to be saved. What do you do from there? How do you forward? We all weather the ups and downs of relationships and to not tell a story about something that happens all the time would be remiss on some level.”

Callie and Arizona do work in the same hospital on Grey’s Anatomy, and they have been in the operating room together before, but don’t expect to see that happen again, at least not anytime soon, at least not for these next few episodes as Ramirez explained that she’s trying to make things easier. That also means that they’re still wearing their wedding rings, but the actress revealed that Callie is going to continue to confide in Meredith, who is going through her own issues as well.

“Callie and Meredith form a bond over their individual relationship issues, and Meredith is somebody Callie confides in. I don’t remember if Callie actually literally says to her on-camera like, ‘We’re broken up.’ But they’re still wearing their wedding rings, so nobody says anything about it.”

Meanwhile, Capshaw said that she hopes that they can find a way to work together so they can form “a really successful relationship as co-parents, friends and colleagues,” which itself could lead to “a story worth telling.”

The future may be grim for the “Calzona” relationship on Grey’s Anatomy, but as Capshaw and Ramirez have both said, their characters are still very much part of each other’s lives. How are you hoping to see what comes next for these two doctors play out?

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
