Producer Says ‘Gone Girl’ Should Have Been A TV Series

Gone Girl has been topping the box office for a few weeks, but could it have been a successful TV series? According to longtime producer Chris Moore, Gone Girl would have been better off as a series.

It’s not a far fetched thought — the “whodunit” genre has been very successful on television, and the plot of Amy Dunne’s disappearance could have lasted for a season or two. Moore, who has partnered with star Ben Affleck in the past, is convinced it would have made an excellent mini series.

Of Gone Girl, Moore spoke about what he would have done with the film at the New York Television Festival.

“I think Gone Girl is like a six episode, maybe ten episode television show.”

It sounds like Moore had problems with Gone Girl, which is an opinion that some critics shared on the David Fincher film. He continued to outline what decisions would have fared better in a television series format.

“There are a ton of decisions that get made in that movie. Like what [Rosamund Pike’s Amy Dunne] is thinking when she kills that guy, what [Ben Affleck’s Nick Dunne] is thinking when he decides to stay with her — that’s a give away if you haven’t seen it yet – that to me, I would’ve liked a lot better if I got to see all that play out. To show that even in two and a half hours is hard.”

As stated, Moore has a history with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. The three were producers for Project Greenlight, a reality TV series that was ultimately before its time. The 2001 series couldn’t quite figure out what kind of reality show it wanted to be, sought out to realize one aspiring filmmaker’s dream and followed their steps in making their first film. Its last season was in 2003, but Affleck and Damon are relaunching the series now that it has a place in the genre of reality television.

Moore is no longer involved with Project Greenlight, and has his own show called The Chair on Starz which is drawing similar comparisons. Of the show he said, “I love Project Greenlight. It was a big part of my life, and I’m glad Matt and Ben are bringing it back. I didn’t expect there not to be comparisons. I mean, it says, from one of the guys that did Project Greenlight.”

Do you think Gone Girl would have made for excellent television?
