Megan Mahoney, Former High School Gym Teacher, Facing 30 Counts Of Statutory Rape

Megan Mahoney, a former New York high school gym teacher, was arrested and arraigned on Monday for allegedly having sex with a teenage student.

The 24-year old woman who also worked at the school as an assistant basketball coach now faces 30 counts of statutory rape, according to Daily Mail.

Reports show that Megan Mahoney had sex with a then 16-year old teenage boy multiple times over a three-month period — from October 31, 2013 to January 9, 2014.

According to the New York Post, Megan Mahoney and the teenage student allegedly engaged in inappropriate sexual acts “at least two times per week during the period.” Mahoney was also accused of four counts of a criminal sexual act in the third degree for oral sex as well as one count of endangering the welfare of a minor.

An investigation conducted by the New York Police Department concluded that at least a few of the sexual encounters between Mahoney and the teenage student occurred on school premises.

After being spotted with the boy by his ex-girlfriend at a local pizzeria in January, Megan Mahoney resigned from her positions at Moore Catholic High School. Richard Postiglione was stripped of his duties as the athletic director for the school once the scandal was exposed.

According to an interview with the New York Post conducted back in January, the relationship between Megan and the teenage boy started after Megan approached him in the school gym to offer assistance as a basketball coach. In regards to her arrest on Monday evening, when contacted by the New York Post, the boy said, “I don’t really know how I feel about it.”

Years before these sexual allegations and charges surfaced, Megan Mahoney made headlines for her impressive performance in high school and college as a star athlete and basketball player, according to SI Live. For instance, Mahoney was named the New York State Class A Basketball Player of the Year in 2007. By scoring over 1,300 points in her high school basketball career, Megan Mahoney was listed as the 27th highest scoring high school girl’s basketball player of all time in Staten Island.

The New York Post reported that the Archdiocese of New York was not aware of Mahoney being arrested but is willing to “cooperate fully in any investigation.”

Megan Mahoney is currently being represented by Eric Nelson as her attorney. She was released without bail and declined to comment. However, she is due back in court on December 2.

If Megan Mahoney is found guilty, each of the sex charges against her are felonies — which means that each one carries a maximum of four years in jail.
