Billy Bob Thornton Talks ‘Crazy Time’ With Angelina Jolie

Back in the 90s, if there was anything that could possibly eclipse Angelina Jolie’s career it was her odd relationship with Billy Bob Thornton. The two had a whirlwind romance which included public make out sessions on the red carpet, over-the-top proclamations about their sexual history, and that one time they wore vials of each other’s blood around their necks.

Angelina Jolie was a rising star back then who had her own set of issues to deal with aside from her marriage to Billy Bob Thornton. These days she lives a more settled life with husband Brad Pitt and their six children.

Now that Billy Bob Thornton is enjoying a reinvention thanks to the TV series Fargo, he is opening up about that “pretty crazy” time in his life with Jolie.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Billy Bob explains the vials of blood they wore.

“I mean it was a crazy time. I’ve never been fond of it. [The] vial of blood is very simple. You know those lockets you buy that are clear and you put a picture of your grannie in and wear it around your neck? She bought two of those.”

The reason behind wearing each other’s blood was due to their busy schedules. At the time, Jolie was shooting the first of the Tomb Raider series and Billy Bob Thornton was off filming Monster’s Ball.

“She thought it would be interesting and romantic if we took a little razorblade and sliced our fingers, smeared a little blood on these lockets and you wear it around your neck. From that, we were wearing quart jars of blood around our necks. And we were vampires and we lived in a dungeon.”

Although the two divorced back in 2003, Jolie has nothing but fond memories of her time with Thornton. Back in 2008 she told Entertainment Weekly of their marriage.

“I still love him dearly and think the world of him and I’m proud to have been his wife for a time. I don’t believe in regrets. It’s a dangerous habit to get into—it makes you pause in your life if you start thinking back and questioning yourself.”

Following her split from Billy Bob, Angelina went off to make Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2005, which started rumors of a budding romance with Pitt despite the actor trying to save his marriage to Jennifer Aniston. Pitt and Aniston were later divorced and in 2006 the couple publicly spoke about their relationship for the first time.
