Etsy Sellers Seek To Cash In On Black Friday Locally

For the first time, Etsy sellers join Small Business Saturday to sell their goods locally. Small Business Saturday, anchored between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, presents an opportunity for Etsy sellers to cash-in on holiday sales thanks, in part, to the national media attention Small Business Saturday generates.

Saturday, November 29, small retailers across the country will open their doors to host Etsy sellers’ trunk shows. This event helps local shops to compete against the big-name Black Friday and Cyber Monday retailers while helping Etsy independent online sellers bring their products to brick-and-mortar businesses.

Forbes reports that since Small Business Saturday’s inception, there has been an increase in spending with each passing year. To further support Small Business Saturday and small businesses nationwide this holiday season, American Express OPEN is encouraging small business owners to support independent Etsy sellers by hosting trunk shows on Small Business Saturday.

Forbes goes on to say that the trunk shows provide online Etsy sellers with “an opportunity to put their products in front of customers in a traditional retail setting and for small business owners, the trunk show is a chance to increase foot traffic to their store by providing diverse products all while supporting a local artisan in their community.” Trunk shows are events where retailers and designers interact with customers in a casual, friendly environment.

Etsy is an ecommerce site established in 2005 that focuses on handmade or vintage items and supplies as well as unique factory-manufactured items. It currently has over 40 million sellers with annual transactions with over one million active shops in 200 countries. Last year Etsy boasted sales of $1.35 billion in total merchandise sales. The majority of Etsy sellers are between the ages of 20 and 30—most of whom are college graduates.

Each registered trunk show host will receive a Trunk Show Activation Kit that includes a $25 Etsy gift card to purchase supplies from Etsy sellers and two $25 American Express Shop Small Rewards Cards to defray the cost of supplies needed to host a successful trunk show.

Interested buyers must first be members of Etsy Wholesale—its B2B marketplace where vetted sellers grow and scale their businesses in the greater retail community. Nordstrom and West Elm have partnered with the platform. Business News Daily says that the partnership allows sellers to increase their brand recognition through a presence in boutiques.
