National Bosses Day Quotes That Could Get You Promoted — Or Fired

National Bosses Day, also known as Boss’s Day, is celebrated every year on October 16. Mark the date on your calendar, especially if you want to keep your job. If you don’t have time to buy a card, you can always post a quote about how great your boss is on Facebook or send a one-line greeting right to the head honcho via a text message.

Brainy Quote has plenty of complimentary Bosses Day quotes that will make you look like a star employee. There are also a few funny ones that could get you fired if your employer doesn’t have a sense of humor.

If your boss has a big ego, send him a quote written by a famous boss, like Bill Gates or Lee Iacocca. And nothing says “you’re the boss” better than a quote written by crime boss John Gotti.

  • “If you think your boss is stupid, remember: you wouldn’t have a job if he was any smarter.” – John Gotti
  • “If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss. He doesn’t have tenure.” – Bill Gates
  • “I’ve always found that the speed of the boss is the speed of the team.” – Lee Iacocca

Does the hotshot in charge enjoy a little funny business during the workday? Then by all means send along a humorous quote or perhaps one of JibJab‘s free Boss’s Day e-cards — just skip the ones titled, “My Boss is a D**chebag” or “Certificate to Sleep with the Boss.” Even if your employer has a sense of humor, overly rude quotes or cards may land you in the unemployment line.

  • “Show me a man who is a good loser and I’ll show you a man who is playing golf with his boss.” – Doug Larson
  • “If you think your boss is stupid, remember: you wouldn’t have job if he was any smarter.” – Albert A Gran
  • “Key to being a good manager is keeping the people who hate you away from those who are still undecided.” – Casey Stengal

Wondering how celebrating your boss became a yearly event? According to Punch Bowl, National Bosses Day was started by Patricia Bays Haroski, a secretary for State Farm Insurance back in the 1950s.

In 1958, Haroski registered the name “National Boss’ Day” with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as a way to honor employers who were kind and fair throughout the year. Her father was reportedly the reason she chose Oct. 16 the annual day to honor bosses in the U.S. and Canada — it was her father’s birthday and felt he was an excellent boss.
