“I am getting an abortion next Friday,” an unidentified woman wrote in an open letter to the baby she will never have. After the woman posted the letter to Reddit on Thursday evening, it quickly went viral – sparking both vehement opposition and vocal support for her decision.
The letter was entitled, “I am getting an abortion next Friday. An Open Letter to the Little Life I Won’t Get to Meet.” The woman tells the unborn child that she is not ready to be a mother, and wanted to say goodbye. Since the letter was posted anonymously, there is obviously no proof that the letter was actually written by a pregnant woman preparing for an abortion, or even a woman at all.
The letter has sparked intense debate about abortion and adoption, which may have been an unintended consequence or the primary goal – if the “abortion next Friday” letter was not authentic. Unless the author comes forward, the world will likely never know the whole story behind the viral abortion letter.
An excerpt from the “I am getting an abortion” letter reads, “I am sorry that this is goodbye. I’m sad that I’ll never get to meet you. You could have your father’s eyes and my nose and we could make our own traditions, be a family,” the letter posted on Reddit states in the first paragraph.
“But, Little Thing, we will meet again. I promise that the next time I see that little blue plus, the next time you are in the same reality as me, I will be ready for you,” it goes on to note.
The unidentified woman who posted the abortion letter on Reddit says that she is both sorry and not sorry about the abortion decision. While the author said it is heartbreaking that she does not feel the excitement she is supposed to experience as a pregnant woman, she said she realizes that she is neither prepared nor equipped to become a mother. The “I am getting an abortion next Friday” letter goes on to state that the woman wants her baby to have all the things which she did not have as a child.
“Little Thing, I want you to be happy. More than I want good things for myself, I want the best things for the future,” the letter adds. “That’s why I can’t be your mother right now, I am still growing myself. It wouldn’t be fair to bring a new life into a world where I am still haunted by ghosts of the life I’ve lived. I can’t bring you here. Not like this.”
Many Reddit users offered the woman support in the comments sections beneath the “I am getting an abortion next Friday” letter. The woman responded with gratitude, and said she feels awful for “not wanting something” that, at the same time, she wants so badly. Some letter readers feel that the woman should have opted instead for adoption, and given the baby the gift of life with a loving family unable to conceive.
