The Fappening Continues: Former Doctor Who Matt Smith And Model Daisy Lowe Said To Be Latest Victims

The list of celebrities whose private pictures have been compromised in what some call “The Fappening” continues to grow. The newest additions, according to a new report, appear to be former Doctor Who star Matt Smith and his ex-girlfriend Daisy Lowe.

The Telegraph carried news on Thursday that Smith and Lowe appeared to be the latest victims of the Fappening – the term is a crude portmanteau of “happening” and internet slang for masturbation – a massive leak of stolen private pictures of dozens of celebrities. The pictures showing Lowe and Smith, according to Buzzfeed, were taken in a hotel bathroom. In them, Lowe and Smith are posing together.

The BBC notes that about 18 images of Lowe and Smith are making the rounds, and they have reportedly been leaked under the title “Daisy Lowe Leaked Nude.”

Smith was one of the more recent actors to take on the role of Doctor Who in the popular sci-fi series of the same name. He quit the role last year but still has a healthy following of devoted fans.

Lowe, 25, is a British fashion model, who has modeled in Elle, GQ, Vogue, and other magazines. The pair split in 2013.

Should the pictures turn out to be valid, they would make Smith only the second male victim of the Fappening which has so far been targeted mostly at women. Earlier this week, images of reality TV star Nick Hogan, son of Hulk Hogan, leaked to the the internet, making him the first male celebrity to be a major target of the leak.

One other male, Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, had his bare bottom shown off in one picture in the first wave of the Fappening. Verlander, though, was only part of a larger collection of pictures that featured supermodel Kate Upton.

The release of the private celebrity pictures online sparked considerable debate when the images first started hitting the internet. A number of commentators, including former American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken, weren’t sympathetic to the celebrities whose privacy was violated. Aiken in particular took a harsh tone, saying that the victims of the leak got “what they deserved” for having such pictures of themselves in the first place.

Others, though, have decried not only the people that leaked the pictures, but those internet users that went to look at them. In the first wave of the Fappening, HBO star Lena Dunham was among the first to speak out, calling the leak a “sex crime” and begging internet users not to search for the leaked nudes.

Emma Watson followed suit shortly after, saying that the privacy violation was outstripped by the “lack of empathy” from internet commenters.

More recently, Jennifer Lawrence has finally spoken up on the occurrence. Lawrence was perhaps the biggest star whose pictures were leaked and she remained silent on the violation for some time. Lawrence echoed Dunham’s take on the leak in an interview with Vanity Fair, saying that it wasn’t a scandal – as some were portraying it – but a sex crime.

“It is a sexual violation,” Lawrence said. “It’s disgusting.”
