‘The Walking Dead’ Earns Sixth Season Ahead Of Season 5 Premiere

AMC’s The Walking Dead series will live on through at least a sixth season. The network announced the popular zombie series’ renewal Tuesday just days before the fifth season premiere.

Season five of The Walking Dead premieres Sunday, October 12 at 9 p.m. on AMC. The show has consistently won the 18-49 year-old demographic and is the highest-rated show in cable history. So, this was probably a no-brainer.

“We could not be more excited for October 12th as we share new episodes of The Walking Dead with fans around the globe,” said AMC president Charlie Collier on the show’s official blog. “In advance of Sunday’s season five premiere, AMC proudly confirms a sixth season order of this extraordinary series. Thank you to Robert Kirkman, Scott Gimple, the terrific executive producers, and the entire team who brings this compelling world and these rich characters to life. There’s plenty more Dead ahead thanks to their impressive, collective effort.”

The same team of Scott Gimple as the showrunner/executive producer plus executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, GerNicotero, and Tom Luse will all return for season six.

The Walking Dead - Season 5

How long will The Walking Dead last? The show is still well behind the comic book series created by Robert Kirkman. The creative mind behind the comic thinks there is at least 12 seasons worth of material that can be adapted into the TV show.

There are plenty of other stories to tell in The Walking Dead universe though. AMC recently ordered a spin-off / companion series with an all new setting. The first descriptions of the cast of characters have already been revealed as well showing a strong emphasis on family over the rag tag group of current survivors thrown together.

The Walking Dead is one of the rare transmedia hits. In addition to breaking cable viewership records and being one of the most popular comics available, it also has a critically praised episodic game series developed by Telltale Games. It was announced this summer that it is returning for a third season as well.

It’s hard to think of season six of The Walking Dead already with an entire fifth season that is sure to be filled with tension and dramatic deaths that hasn’t even started. What are you looking forward to with the season premiere on Sunday and how much longer do you think the show will last? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
