Murder suspect Heather Mack is claiming that her boyfriend Tommy Schaefer murdered her mother, Sheila Mack, and stuffed her into a suitcase after she used a racial slur by calling him the n-word. The finger pointing between former boyfriend and girlfriend comes after the pair initially claimed a completely different story.
In a related report by The Inquisitr, police in Bali, Indonesia, say “the body of Sheila von Weise Mack was found at the luxurious St. Regis Bali resort, stuffed into a gray, hard-sided suitcase. Police chief Djoko Hari Utomo said that Mack’s body showed signs of blunt-force trauma to the head and face, had bruises on her wrists, and had a broken nail, indicating a possible struggle.”
Both Heather Mack and Tommy Schaefer initially claimed the family had been held by an armed gang, and that they had been able to escape while the Sheila was killed. But security cameras show the pair arguing on a Monday night, and the next day a horrified taxi driver found a bloodied suitcase allegedly holding the body of Sheila Mack. Police found bloodied towels in the room, and Schaefer and Mack were shown leaving the back of the hotel only to be found in a town six miles away.
Capt. Nengah Sadiarta, police detective chief for Denpasar, Bali’s capital, says Heather Mack is now claiming that Schaefer became angry with her mother over using the n-word to describe him.
“According to Heather, Tommy was offended by what the victim said during a quarrel in room 317,” Mr Nengah said. “The victim called Tommy a n*gger. Tommy retorted, saying, ‘Your husband was a “n*gger” too.’ Sheila then said, ‘Yes, but a rich one.'”
Raja Nasution, an Indonesian lawyer for Mack, confirmed the account reported by police, but added that Mack claims to have not seen her mother be killed.
“She did not mention murder, but she told investigators that Tommy did the beating,” Nasution said. “Our client did not mention that the beating was intended to kill her mother or not. She just confessed to the police that Tommy beat her mother.”
Police say videos show Schaefer taking a piece of iron from the grip of a fruit bowl the hotel provided for the room.
“We suspect it was the fruit bowl… and that he used it to hit the victim,” Mr. Nengah said. “We found broken glass and the metal handle [from the fruit bowl] in room 616. The fruit bowl was from room 616.”
Police investigators found bits of iron matching the piece in the victim’s wound, and jacket belonging to Schaefer also had blood matching the mother’s blood.
Heather Mack denies helping her boyfriend stuff her mother into the bloodied suitcase, but surveillance videos show Heather bringing a cart to Sheila Mack’s room to transport the suitcase that contained her mother’s body.
