A Florida man faces disorderly conduct and battery on a person 65 or older, after he allegedly attacked an 80-year-old Applebee’s customer who complained about his cursing. The incident took place at the restaurant’s Port Orange location, according to the Smoking Gun.
Mikie Sawyer, 26, was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly attacking Harry Sander, 80, the report says. Sander told police he heard Sawyer talking “obscenities” at the Applebee’s bar. Sander then got up to ask the suspect politely “if he could please stop using the ‘F word’ and stop talking so loud about ‘t****s and a**.'”
Trying to reason with Sawyer, the unsuspecting 80-year-old man, leaned closer to the suspect and said, “In my Germany you don’t speak in such a manner.”
Apparently this didn’t sit well with the attacker, who replied, “I don’t care where you are from, whether it be Russia or Dutch, take your (expletive) to the other side of the bar,” according to the Daytona Beach News-Journal. Sander then asked the attacker to move away, but he didn’t do it.
This is when the suspect got violent, told Sander that he didn’t have to stop cursing if he didn’t want to, and punched the 80-year-old in the face knocking him over. He hit a table and then fell to the ground, the report said.
Following the attack, the 80-year-old man doesn’t remember much of what happened and was treated at the scene. Witnesses reportedly back Sander’s account of events at the Applebee’s restaurant. However, one person said he believes the 80-year-old may have also pushed Sawyer, Click Orlando reports.
Sawyer fled the scene before police arrived, but was pulled over shortly thereafter based on information provided about the getaway vehicle by Applebee’s manager — who police say was also threatened and attacked by the man. The suspect reportedly said that Sander had punched him as well, but had no bruising to his body, according to the police report. However, he had discoloration and bruising to his knuckles and fingers, and changed his story several times.
The individual who attacked the 80-year-old man was booked at the Volusia County Branch Jail, but was later released on a $2,500 bond, according to My News 13.
