ISIS is taking direct aim at the United States, calling President Barack Obama a “mule of the Jews” and vowing to take the fight to America.
The militant group released a 42-minute message on Monday that, for the first time, called on global supporters to take up the fight. Abu Mohammed Ali al-Adnani, the group’s spokesman, instructed listeners to attack the United States in any way they can.
“Kill the disbeliever whether he is civilian or military, for they have the same ruling. Both of them are disbelievers,” he said.
In the message, ISIS openly mocked Barack Obama, saying he is a coward for using air strikes rather than engaging the group directly on the ground in Iraq and Syria.
ISIS has taken direct aim at the president and the United States in the past. When Americans Steven Sotloff and James Foley were beheaded by the group, the masked executioner mocked Obama and warned the United States not to escalate air strikes in the region.
But within the United States, support may be building for ground forces. House Speaker John Boehner said this weekend that the U.S. has “no choice” but to send ground troops to fight ISIS.
“If I were the president, I probably wouldn’t have talked about what I wouldn’t do,” Boehner said. “And maybe we can get enough of these forces trained to get ’em on the battlefield. But somebody’s boots have to be there.”
Boehner warned that the United States could pay dearly if it does not engage ISIS directly to cut off the threat.
“We have no choice,” he said. “These are barbarians. They intend to kill us. And if we don’t destroy them first, we’re gonna pay the price.”
In the past few weeks there have been reports that ISIS is trying to attack the United States by sending fighters through the southern border with Mexico, though these have been largely debunked as false. Defense officials say they believe there are not currently any credible threats against the United States from ISIS.
