Vernon Davis Back Injury: Will It End His Career? [Video]

Facing what could be a career ending back injury, Vernon Davis left the field Sunday after what ESPN reported as an awkward hit early in the third quarter.

San Francisco 49ers fans were horrified on Sunday when Vernon Davis, who sat out the game last week against the Arizona Cardinals, found himself unable to get up after the first down play.

Televised coverage showed the veteran tight end, who had been limited in practice all week, try to get up after being hit by Philadelphia Eagles linebacker DeMeco Ryans right at the end of the play. No flag was thrown against the defender presumed to have caused the back injury.

The star player had just been tackled after picking up 5 yards on a pass from Colin Kaepernick. When the play was over, Davis tried to stand but instead fell to the ground writhing and grabbing his lower back.

“This looks like a pretty serious injury,” noted Fox broadcaster Joe Buck. “He can’t even get off the field right now. He started to walk, and then that back locked up on him. 49’ers on second and five have got to hope that’s just muscular. He got bent forward and was just grabbing his back. He is locked up. It didn’t look good.” Color commentator Troy Aikman added “You said it, Joe. Watching him trying to get to the locker room, he was moving very slow and then he had to stop a few times and re-group. Hope that he’s going to be ok for the future.”

The hometown crowd at the brand new Levi’s Stadium was relieved as Davis was able to walk off the field, although he required substantial assistance from the coaching staff. After the game, reporters gathered around the popular player who assured them “Everything should be cool.” He said he was not “worried” about the back injury. Everyone noticed, however that he winced and walked away gingerly.

No one is certain how this back injury, the latest of many injuries lately, will affect Davis’ stock price. In April of this year, Fantex created an IPO giving fans a shot at ownership of the star’s future earnings. More than 400,000 shares were sold.

A career-threatening back injury such as this is one reason Fantex warned potential investors that a Vernon Davis tracking stock is “highly speculative and the securities involve a high degree of risk.” On April 28, shares closed at $12, while on Sept 25, amid concerns about whether or not Davis would even play against the Eagles, his stock closed at $8.50. That was before this back injury.

What do you think? Will everything be cool as he says, or is Vernon Davis’ back injury going to cost him, and his team, plenty?
