Tony Abbott Supports Use Of Cannabis

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has come out in support of the use of cannabis.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Tony Abbott has publicly expressed that he supports the legalization of cannabis for medical purposes, prompting one comedian to label him the “Bob Marley of Downunder.”

In an email response to popular talk show host, Alan Jones, of 2GB radio, Tony Abbott made it clear that he does not have a problem with the use of cannabis for medical purposes.

The Guardian has reported that the Prime Minister’s email was read on air during Alan’s talkback show. Alan, who had written to Tony Abbott to seek his intervention, has been campaigning on behalf of Dan Haslam, who has been using cannabis to help relieve the pain during treatment of his terminal cancer. Alan took interest in the issue after Haslam’s mother started an online petition to decriminalize cannabis for pain relief. The petition was addressed to the New South Wales health minister and also to the premier, Mike Baird.

Mr. Baird has since announced that a report into clinical trials of cannabis has been commissioned by the New South Wales parliament.

Tony Abbott’s goes a step further. He believes that there is no need for further testing since the evidence from other countries which have legalized cannabis for medical use indicate that the drug is safe. His email explains his position.

“I have no problem with the medical use of cannabis. I have no problem with the medical use of opiates. I was under the impression that the personal use of cannabis was no longer an offence in New South Wales. If a drug is needed for a valid medicinal purpose though, and is being administered safely there should be no question of its legality. And if a drug that is proven to be safe abroad is needed here, it should be available. I agree that the regulation of medicines is a thicket of complexity, bureaucracy and corporate self-interest. My basic contention is that something that has been found to be safe in a reliable jurisdiction shouldn’t need to be tested again here.”

The Inquisitr has revealed that many countries, such as Jamaica, have been advancing legislative changes that would legalize cannabis. Tony Abbott’s opinion on the medicinal use of cannabis will no doubt influence some of these changes and endear him to many Bob Marley fans.
