Free PlayStation Plus For PlayStation 4 Weekend

PlayStation 4 owners will find free PlayStation Plus this coming weekend as a little gift from Sony. PlayStation Plus is a required subscription for owners of Sony’s next-gen gaming and entertainment console if they wish to participate in online multiplayer game modes. Games such as Call of Duty, Plants Vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare and the recently released Destiny‘s strike missions all require a subscription to the premium service.

PlayStation Blog is reporting that owners of the PlayStation 4 who do not have PlayStation Plus yet will find that they can have the multiplayer portion of PlayStation Plus for free, this weekend starting at 12:01 a.m. PST on September 26 and the service will be free until September 28 at 11:59 p.m. PST. This will give gamers who own titles such as the ones listed above, the ability to join friends and random digital sojourners as they fight across maps with zombies, plants and Fallen.

One thing the free PlayStation Plus weekend will not offer is is the ability to enjoy the free PlayStation Plus games that come with the subscription for the month. As the Inquisitr reported previously, the games offered for the month of September for the PlayStation 4 include Velocity 2x and Sportsfriends. Games who also own either the PlayStation 3 or the PS Vita will be able to take advantage of the free weekends PS Plus games such as PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale and Hoard. In order to enjoy these games as part of the Instant Game Collection, a full subscription will need to be purchased.

Owners of the PlayStation 4 will benefit the most from the free weekend as PlayStation 3 and PS Vita owners are not required to subscribe to PlayStation Plus in order to partake in online multiplayer gaming. Sony is likely hoping that the taste of the multiplayer access will be enough of a dangling carrot to encourage full subscriptions giving those who sign up access to free games, steep discounts and online gaming. The PlayStation Plus service covers a wide berth of options besides just free games that rotate each month. PS Plus members can receive discounts of up to 75 percent on titles in the PlayStation Store, online storage for game saves across the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita with an option to automatically upload the save data at a specific time each day.

The PlayStation Plus mandatory subscription for online gaming was one of the drawbacks for PlayStation owners upgrading to the latest hardware from Sony. One of the most heavily touted features of the PlayStation 3 was its lack of subscription for online gaming as opposed to the required Xbox Live Gold service which was also required for online gaming. With both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 requiring a subscription for online gaming, both console owners are experimenting with ways to increase their user base.
