Battlefield 3 will have optional hi-res texture install on Xbox 360

Good news for all of you Xbox 360 fans that were planning on picking up Battlefield 3 on the Xbox 360 on October 25: In a statement to GamerZines, DICE revealed that the Xbox 360 version’s second disc will have an optional install for high resolution textures.

It will operate similarly to how it did with RAGE, DICE’s Patrick Liu explained. “I think Rage did it as well, where you can install content to stream higher res textures,” he said. “We’re pushing that technology to the limit, and compared to our competitors, I would argue that we’re the best looking game.”

Liu went on to explain that on the Xbox 360 version, the singleplayer and multiplayer are split up between two discs, though it isn’t known which modes are available on what disc.

Speaking of the unknown, DICE hasn’t said so far whether or not the PlayStation 3 version will be getting a similar optional (or mandatory) install for high-resolution texture streaming straight from the Blu-ray disc. Hopefully we can get some clarification on that ahead of release.

Battlefield 3‘s open beta is currently ongoing on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Gamers can get a chance to try out one of the game’s nine maps, Operation Metro, in the Rush gametype.

Battlefield 3 is due out on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this October 25 in North America, October 28 in Europe.
