Krispy Kreme Celebrates Talk Like A Pirate Day – Sept. 19

Krispy Kreme celebrates Talk Like A Pirate Day with free doughnuts on Friday, Sept. 19 to customers who talk like a pirate or wear pirate costumes. The food chain is giving away its original glazed doughnuts at all participating locations in the US and Canada. The event has become a social media sensation in recent years, celebrating its 2014 International Talk Like a Pirate Day on Facebook as a public event. The “Krispy Kreme Pirate Academy” has become a fun annual event for children and adults who love pirates.

Inquisitr covered last year’s events when Krispy Kreme held its free donuts as “booty” promotion. In 2013, Chick Fil-A jumped in with a free breakfast promotion, too. The simplicity of Krispy Kreme’s promotion wins over customers who want to walk in and say pirate phrases to get a free treat. The event is so much fun that even Facebook allows for a special language settings, “English (Pirate)” to celebrate the day with pirate enthusiasts, according to Inquisitr.

NY Daily News also notes that the casual holiday began with John Baur and Mark Summers in 1995.“The point is, there is no point. And that’s what’s fun about Talk Like a Pirate Day specifically, and talking like a pirate in general.” The duo maintain a fun website, dedicated to the International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and they add that when “Dave Berry mentioned us in his nationally syndicated newspaper column in 2002,” the faux holiday went from being a silly idea to a fun international phenomenon.

These days, Talk Like a Pirate Day even garners attention from social media and business news platforms. News Observer sent out a friendly reminder about the free doughnuts from Kripy Kreme this morning to alert lovers of the Original Glazed treat. International Business Times explains that there is no coupon to redeem the promotion. Participants who approach the counter while talking like a pirate receive a free original glazed doughnut. To increase the fun, Krispy Kreme has made it possible for customers to receive one dozen free donuts if they dress up with three items of qualifying pirate garb to the store. Weapons are prohibited.

So, what can customers wear to receive free doughnuts?

WRAL suggests that customers, adult and children alike, dress up with three items from the following list to qualify for one free dozen original glazed doughnuts from Krispy Kreme to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day in 2014. Qualifying items include:

• Eye patch
• Pirate hat
• Bandana
• Peg leg
• Parrot on shoulder
• Pirate shirt / Loose white shirt
• Knickers
• Leather belt
• Silver and gold necklaces and earrings
• Pirate hook
• Pointy black boots or ragged brown sandals

Krispy Kreme is certainly a festive company though. As a corporation it participates in a variety of celebrations to connect with customers. Later this month, from September 29 to October 31, the Krispy Kreme stores will launch a Ghostbusters doughnut in its United States and Canada locations. It is the company’s way to celebrate the Ghostbusters movie’s recent 30th anniversary and the upcoming Halloween holiday. Until then, customers can enjoy free doughnuts by dressing up as pirates at their local Krispy Kreme store to celebrate the 2014 Talk Like a Pirate Day.
