Ed Sheeran’s Success Isn’t Going To His Head … So He Says

Ed Sheeran’s music career has only been going up lately. After having his sophomore album make it to the number one spot on the U.K. Billboard charts, playing at the AFL opening show with Tom Jones, and kicking back on a world tour, you’d think Ed Sheeran would be getting a pretty big ego. But according to the Toronto Sun, it’s quite the opposite. Ed Sheeran claims his success hasn’t gone to his head.

Ed spoke to QMI Agency about how his music has taken the world by storm, allowing him to collaborate on songs with Pharrell Williams and Taylor Swift, and even getting a song on the soundtrack for The Fault in Our Stars. Sheeran maintained his modesty throughout the interview, making a point to emphasize how grateful he is for all the love his fans give him.

“To be able to work with two legends this early in my career, I’m just very fortunate that they gave me the opportunity,” said Ed Sheeran. “I wasn’t intimidated. Both those guys have such a humble approach to things… they really make you feel equal in the studio, even if you’re not. And both have a very similar style. They are all about getting the best out of the artist.”

Even though Ed Sheeran’s debut album was massively successful, Ed didn’t fall into a slump for his second effort. X has already sold millions of copies — and it’s still selling. Ed was asked about the pressure he felt when making the follow-up album, since expectations were high to make an LP as good as the first.

“I put a tremendous amount of pressure on anything I do. This record was no different.”

It’s all about the music to Ed Sheeran, and it seems as though he never stops writing new songs. Most importantly, Sheeran says he doesn’t spend any time soaking up the success.

“I don’t really want to bask in [my success],” said Ed. “I like being able to share it with people, I like being able to fly my family out to places, put them on holidays and stuff like that, be able to go to a bar with my friends and being able to just say ‘drink up.'”

It might be easy to see why Ed Sheeran became such a huge hit for his singing and songwriting ability, but many fans may be surprised to learn that many of the labels Ed approached early in his career claimed he didn’t have a chance in the music industry.

“Every single label I had gone to at the time had told me this song wasn’t a hit, this song wouldn’t work, and the fact that I was slightly chubby and ginger wasn’t a good ‘marketing tool’ for them,” Sheeran explained. “So yeah it did definitely feel like it wasn’t going to happen.”

But somehow it did happen, and now there’s plenty of Ed’s music to enjoy. Check out the video for Ed’s recent single “Don’t.”
