Scarlett Johansson Lures Russian Movie Fans To The Box Office With ‘Lucy’ [Video]

Scarlett Johansson just became a mother for the first time. While she basks in the glow of new motherhood after welcoming her first child with her 32-year-old French fiancé, Romain Dauriac, her exciting action/sci-fi/thriller flick Lucy is raking in the big bucks in Russia and elsewhere. If the green-eyed bombshell Scarlett Johansson wasn’t enough to coax movie fans into theaters to see Lucy, there’s always the distinctive, soothing voice of co-star Morgan Freeman to attract fans. The 77-year-old actor is always a box office draw even if he isn’t quite as beautiful as the actress in the lead role.

Not only did Lucy exceed expectations for box office receipts in Russia, the movie actually grossed $9.6 million, or 363 million rubles, during its opening weekend, probably earning it a place in the top-ten grossing movies of the year in that country. The film’s United States premiere took place seven weeks earlier. Opening weekend in the U.S. fetched $43,899,340. According to Hollywood Reporter, Scarlett Johansson and writer/director Luc Besson are popular in Russia. Apparently the duo is even more popular in the U.S. as well as France, where Lucy enjoyed a $44 million debut, reported Hollywood Reporter.

One look at the trailer for Lucy demonstrates the reason why the film is getting so much attention in Russia and elsewhere. The film is packed with action and edge-of-your-seat excitement. The story follows Scarlett Johansson’s character as she is held captive and the bad guys implant a bag of drugs in her body, turning her into an unwilling drug mule. Things really start to get crazy when the bag springs a leak inside her stomach. Since the substance in her body is not the typical drug mule fare, things escalate quickly. The drugs enter Lucy’s system and unlock her brain’s true potential, which provides her with powerful ways to seek revenge on her former captors.

It is interesting to note that Luc Besson has admitted knowing that some scientific assumptions in Lucy were erroneous (e.g. that humans use only 10 percent of their brain), according to IMDb.

Prior to settling down and starting a family with Romain Dauriac, Scarlett Johansson dated Nate Taylor and Sean Penn. She was married to Ryan Reynolds from 2008 to 2011, separating in 2010, and her rumored romances before marrying Reynolds include dalliances with Patrick Wilson, Justin Timberlake, Benicio Del Toro and Jude Law, according to Who’s Dated Who.

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, Johansson gave birth to a bouncing baby girl earlier this month. She and Dauriac chose a lovely traditional name for their daughter. Scarlett Johansson and Dauriac named their bundle of joy Rose.
