Flaming Lips Release 6 Hour Song For Charity

The Flaming Lips are releasing a new song, or five CDs, depending on how you look at it. The new Flaming Lips single, “Found a Star on the Ground,” runs for 6 hours. The song is being released to help to charities from the band’s home city, Oklahoma City.

The LA Times reports that the band decided to generate money for the Central Oklahoma Humane Society and the Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma, through their music. The band solicited donations from their fans by promising to include the name of any person who contributed more than $100 into the song.

The band has raised more than $20,000, and in order to incorporate all of the donors, they created a 6 hour song.

Since the single song is stretched across five CDs, the band decided to release the “Strobo Trip,” which is a multi-sensory device. Fans that buy the Strobo Trip will be able to listen to “Found a Star on the Ground,” as well as two other singles that come in at a much more reasonable length.

Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne said:

“The Strobo Trip by itself is fascinating. I wouldn’t be a surprised to hear about some people taking LSD or something while listening to ‘Found a Star on the Ground,’ and playing with the Strobo Trip for hours and hours. We hope you’ll enjoy them anyway you like.”

Details about the Strobo Trip aren’t currently available but the band said that they would post more information on their website shortly.

The Flaming Lips seem to enjoy the idea of the multi-disk song. The band said that they are currently working on a 24-hour song that will be released soon.

The Flaming Lips said in a statement:

“At this time, we can confirm the rumors of a single 24-hour-long song are indeed insane and absolutely true. The Lips are recording the track this month. While lots of rumors, speculations and ‘facts’ have been circulating, suffice to say official details will be announced once we really know how, when, etc. Stay tuned to www.flaminglips.com for details.”
