Thomas Muller: Manchester United Wanted To Sign Me

Thomas Muller has revealed that Manchester United tired to purchase him over the summer.

The Bayern Munich midfielder, who won the World Cup this summer, revealed that he instantly turned down the offer to join the Premier League side, and that he wouldn’t even consider leaving the German champions.

There were various rumors over the summer that Muller would once again join up with Louis Van Gaal, who managed the German international when he was manager at Munich, but it never materialized.

Instead, United went on to purchase Real Madrid’s Angel Di Maria, Southampton’s Luke Shaw, Monaco’s Radamel Falcao, Sporting Lisbon’s Marcos Rojo, Ajax’s Daley Blind, and Atletico Bilbao’s Ander Herrera. They were also linked to Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos, the latter of whom played alongside Muller at Munich.

Speaking to The Guardian, Muller admitted that there was interest from United to acquire his services.

“I know there was interest, but Man Utd were interested in a lot of players this summer. It never really got anywhere because I had just renewed my contract [until 2019], and Bayern were clear that they saw my future here. The decision for me was an easy one.”

Bayern Munich have had a poor start to the current Bundesliga season, but Muller insists that the side will recover.

“Everyone wants to line everything to the World Cup in the early weeks of the season,” he explained. “You play badly: you’ve fallen into a hole because of the World Cup. You play well: it’s the World Cup feel good factor. Physically, it shouldn’t be a problem at all, especially for us younger guys. Maybe in October, November, it’ll become difficult, mentally. But you can’t think that way when you play at Bayern. You mustn’t. At Bayern, the journey is always headed for titles. So far, the travel agency haven’t called to say there’ll be complications. No rebooking, just yet.”

Previously, a United spokesperson claimed that United didn’t make an offer for Muller or Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus. They released a statement that read, “It is not true what we made offers for either Muller or Reus at any stage.”

This came after Muller told Blind that United had made him an “astronomical” offer to join them. “Of course,” he declared. “I was aware that I could earn more by making that transfer. The amount that foreign clubs were offering me was astronomical. But Bayern are my club, a change was not an issue for me.”
