Ariana Grande’s Right Cheek Wants Some Attention

With recent reports that Ariana Grande walked out of a shoot after a photographer failed to meet her demands, her face is getting more attention. Specifically, her left cheek and its prominence in most — if not all — of her recent photographs. Indeed, a Google search of pics of the pop star will bring up a wealth of shots displaying her left side, normally accented by a severe top-of-the-head ponytail. A clear shot of Grande’s right side is difficult to track down.

The phenomenon even made the pages of The Atlantic this week. The magazine acknowledged Grande’s explanation of the photo shoot incident, which was that she had simply exited the room to change her top and, once she returned, she found that the photographer had left. As for her favorite cheek, writer Trey Taylor had this to say:

“Whether [her photo shoot explanation is] true or not, the no-right-side preference seems supported by her public actions. She appeared on an Australian morning show recently serving dimple at every turn (or lack thereof). And if you watch the video for ‘Break Free,’ released last month, the portside motif becomes undeniable. The video is a near four-minute exercise in facial discrimination.”

By “serving dimple,” Taylor means her left side, which is her famously dimpled cheek. Regardless, Taylor is quick to note Grande is not alone in protecting her image, or even insisting she be shot from a particular angle or side. Mariah Carey’s album covers all featured only one side of her face until her seventh release. The reason, according to The Atlantic, was her split from Tommy Mottola, who had told her at a young age that her best side was her right one.

The controversy led the staff at News.com.au to give some text space to the long-suffering part of the Ariana Grande empire: her right cheek. In an open letter, the right cheek asked Grande for some respect:

“For far too long I, your loyal right side, have been shunned from the limelight, playing the poor forgotten cousin to your famous dimpled left cheek.

The truth is, I’m just as proportional and cute as my left-sided twin and without me you would only have, well, HALF A FACE.

I’ve become a joke. Hidden from the cameras, never able to show the world that I can selfie as good as the leftie. I won’t even begin to talk about how betrayed your #UnlovedRightEar feels, I’ve been listening to it whinge your entire career.

Despite the ribbing, Taylor points out that everyone tries to look their best in photos, and stars, who are under particular scrutiny, are no different:

“Disguising imperfections (if you can call them that) is something we all try to do in one form or another—in fact, the pettiness of Grande & co. almost makes them seem more human.”

As for that video of Grande trying to keep her head tilted to the side during an Australian morning show appearance, you can see that below.
