Will Ferrell Teases ‘Zoolander 2’ Involvement

Zoolander fans have been waiting for a sequel since the film’s release back in 2001. While the critical reception for the flick was relatively split, the movie quickly rose to greater cult prominence almost immediately with its quotable lines, memorable characters, and intentionally dumb humor. Zoolander 2, which has been in the works since 2008, has largely remained in development hell until recent years, and even now Ben Stiller’s involvement as the director hasn’t been officially confirmed. Despite all the unanswered questions still up in the air, Will Ferrell teased his involvement with the flick in an interview with JoBlo.

“We are actually supposed to do a read-through of a sequel script soon, and Mugatu is a part of it.”

Mugatu, if you recall, was the name of Will Ferrell’s character in the original Zoolander, as well as villain of the movie. In a laughably ridiculous plot, the first film involved a deep conspiracy wherein male models were brainwashed into assassinating world leaders throughout history. Zoolander himself was but a pawn in this conspiracy, and brainwashed by Mugatu to assassinate the prime minister of Malaysia. While this development from Will Ferrell confirms Mugatu’s return, it doesn’t do a whole lot to embellish on how much of Zoolander 2 fans can expect to see Ferrell in.

But after years of talk and no results, it is incredibly promising that they have a script for Zoolander 2 in the first place, though it is unclear if the finished script is the same one that Ben Stiller co-wrote with Tropic Thunder co-writer Justin Thoreux — who is also potentially set to direct if Stiller doesn’t take over (via Screen Rant). But if the read-through script is the same script Stiller has been working on over the years, then we at least have a mild idea of what to expect from the Zoolander sequel (via Slash Film).

“As of December, Stiller was saying the ‘Zoolander 2’ plot would have to do with ‘how the fashion world moves so quickly. So, the movie will begin at a time when the whole world has moved on from Derek and Hansel because they’re so ancient history. It’s about them having to reinvent themselves and try to become relevant again.'”

Sounds like a film that’s prime for laughs, and with the script read-through of Zoolander 2 “coming soon,” we can all hope this movie sees the light of day in the near future.

Thoughts on the Zoolander sequel and Will Ferrell’s confirmed involvement? Looking forward to it, or is it too little too late?
