Dolphin Tale Tops Weekend Box Office, Lion King 3D Slips To Third


In a very tight race for the top of the weekend box office the movie Dolphin Tale about an injured dolphin that receives an artificial flipper and starred Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman took the top spot with $14.2 million.

Lion King 3D, the champ of the box office for the last two weeks also fared well with $11 million in domestic box office receipts, while Moneyball which lost out to Lion King last weekend fared better this week with $12.5 million earned.

Also showing up on the box office receipts radar was the Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen dramedy 50/50 which opened to rave reviews while bringing in $8.8 million and the Alex Kendrick drama “Courageous” also with $8.8 million earned.

Another movie in the $8 millino range was the Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz’s sixth place finisher Dream House which took in $8.2 million

The weekends other new release, Anna Faris’ What’s Your Number couldn’t break $6 million with an eighth place finish of $5.6 million, falling just shy of Abduction which was already in wide release.

It has definitely been a good September for family movies as kids head back to school and parents have looked for activities to do with them over their weekends off.
