Yes, by now you’ve seen American Horror Story season four’s sharp-toothed and terrifying clown teaser here at the Inquisitr. No doubt you’ve had a bit of trouble sleeping after that experience (you’re welcome).
Well, now you can experience your first glimpse of the American Horror Story: Freak Show cast in all their bizarre glory, thanks to the full trailer that was posted Sunday on the show’s Facebook page.
As reported by Vanity Fair, the minute-long clip, entitled “Voyeur,” puts the characters on display from the point-of-view of a peeping tom. Viewers are swept through a curtain, and we find ourselves floating through a dark labyrinth of flapping, tattered canvas.
As we move through the shadowed spaces between circus tents, we stop here and there to peer through tears and flaps. We spy on the Horror Story characters as they seem to be preparing for their appearances on-stage:
Kathy Bates as Ethel Darling, the bearded lady.
Michael Chiklis (of The Shield fame) as Wendell Del Toredo, the strong man.
Angela Bassett as Desiree Dupree, the three-breasted woman.
Evan Peters as Jimmy Darling, a young man with “flipper” hands.
Sarah Paulson as the two-headed Bette and Dot.
After we see each of them in more private moments, we’re then treated to the freaks as they pose for faded, old-time photographs. And all the while, the haunting strains of “Carousel” by Melanie Martinez play in the background, deepening the strangeness of it all.
We also see beloved American Horror Story veteran Jessica Lange in a red-and-white striped dress that is reminiscent of circus tents. The actress plays Elsa Mars, the manager of the freak show who, near the end of the trailer, bursts through the curtains once more, plunging us back into the blinding light of day.
Before that, we see the flowing train of Elsa’s dress is held aloft by Jyoti Amge of India, dubbed in 2011 by Guinness as the world’s smallest living woman (she stands just over two feet tall). The 20-year-old Jyoti has also appeared on India’s popular Bigg Boss reality show.
Horror Story fans are no doubt feeling bittersweet chills when it comes to Lange, who has revealed that she will not be returning to the show after Freak Show. Lange, who will have starred in all four seasons, has said that her decision was based on the time commitment required for filming the show.
American Horror Story: Freak Show premieres on FX on October 8 at 10 p.m.
