‘Arrow’ Casts Matt Nable As Ra’s Al Ghul

As the third season of Arrow approaches, many fans are already aware that the emerald archer is set to square off against one of the DC universe’s most powerful villains, Ra’s al Ghul. Thanks to star Stephen Amell, they now also know who will portray the near-immortal head of the League of Assassins.

Australian actor Matt Nable, best known to audiences for his turn as Boss Johns in the Riddick series, will be joining the cast of Arrow for the recurring role of Ra’s, according to The Hollywood Reporter. His casting was announced by Amell on Twitter, before being confirmed by The CW. Ra’s al Ghul will first appear in Arrow‘s 50th episode, “The Magician,” featuring as this season’s primary antagonist.

While Ra’s al Ghul has yet to be revealed on Arrow, his presence has been felt since the beginning of the series. His daughter, Nyssa, has already appeared on the show, while others have ties to the League of Assassins. As The CW’s description reveals, the character will present a major obstacle for Arrow‘s Oliver Queen.

“Ra’s al Ghul is an iconic villain from the pages of DC Comics. He is the leader of the League of Assassins, and father of Nyssa al Ghul (played by Katrina Law). Proud and unforgiving, Ra’s is a ruthless strategist, a master of martial arts, and a shaper of history. He carries the wisdom of the ages, and protects some of its greatest secrets.”

Executive producer Marc Guggenheim claims that Arrow‘s take on Ra’s will be unique when compared with prior interpretations.

“We have a really clever way of doing Ra’s this year that is true to the comic-book origins but different from the way Ra’s was portrayed in the [Christopher] Nolan movies. You don’t want to compete with Batman Begins, even though we’ve always said Batman Begins was a big influence on us. We really wanted our Ra’s to be very different — at least our own Arrow-ified version.”

According to Comicbook.com, earlier rumors pointed towards Oded Fehr as a possible contender for the role. Liam Neeson, who portrayed Ra’s al Ghul in Batman Begins, had also expressed enthusiasm about revisiting the character, as The Inquisitr previously noted.

Although it will take a few episodes before fans get to see Nable as Ra’s al Ghul, Arrow returns to The CW on Oct. 8th.
