A girl trapped in the sand at an Oregon beach has died. According to ABC News, Isabel Grace Franks, 9, was playing at the beach near the Seagull Beach Front Motel. She and her siblings were digging a hole in the sand, a very common past time for children at the beach. After digging the hole, the kids were playing inside of it. While Isabel was standing in the hole, the walls collapsed and she became trapped. Despite the efforts of people nearby who rushed over and tried to help pull the young girl out of the sand, the task was impossible; sand continued pouring in.
A witness recalled the terrifying incident.
“At first we thought, you know, it was just kids, but it was like screaming and screaming and screaming. Well, the people were digging and digging and digging, and it looked like the sand kept collapsing. It was heart wrenching. You could see that people were trying and, I don’t even know what to say. It was awful.”
The girl trapped in the sand died despite emergency personnel performing CPR on her. It is believed that the sand suffocated her, though her exact cause of death has not yet been released by the medical examiner.
According to The News Guard, the incident occurred on Friday, Aug. 29, at approximately 5:15 p.m.
“Police began CPR after Isabel was pulled free, unconscious and not breathing. North Lincoln Fire and Rescue and ambulance medical teams took over CPR, and Isabel was taken to a hospital.”
Isabel was rushed to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln City, but doctors were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
Local officials have warned beach goers about the hazards of large beach holes. Since this sort of thing isn’t uncommon, parents are encouraged to keep their children from playing inside large holes in the sand — particularly ones that are much larger than the child.
The girl trapped in the sand died after the fun day at the beach turned completely tragic. Accidents like this have been reported a couple of times this year. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, a 26-year-old man was killed in a similar fashion last month. That beach hole collapse happened in California, and the man, Adam Pye, couldn’t be saved. Thirty people tried to pull Adam from the sand-filled hole, but the situation became dire very quickly.
