Kraft Recalls American Singles, Fears Possible Spoilage From Supplier

You may need to reconsider your next sandwich. Kraft has issued a recall for American singles pasteurized prepared cheese product (single slices of American cheese).

According to the press release on the company’s website there are four varieties of American single slices being recalled.

They include 3 different sizes of Kraft American Singles: 12 oz, 16 oz and 64 oz. For the 12 oz varieties the Kraft recall says that those products with the “best use by” date of February 20th or 21st, 2015, need to be returned to stores. For all other sizes, products that are best used by February 20th, 2015, could be potentially harmful.

Kraft initiated the recall when it was discovered that a supplier didn’t store an ingredient in the right temperature. The recall notice says that although it is unlikely, the bad storage could lead to some of the products going bad and causing illness.

So far there have been no illnesses reported, and Kraft insists that the recall is simply a precaution. Nevertheless, the recall will include 7,691 cases.

Kraft has had a number of recalls this year. On June, Kraft recalled Velveeta cheese for not having enough preservatives in it.

Although that sounds strange, Velveeta has so many mystery ingredients that it’s claim to be “cheese” is questionable. Nevertheless, without the essential preservative sorbic acid the cheese could never last its normal six month life span without spoiling.

Both the American Singles and Velveeta recalls paled in comparison to another recall in May of Kraft Cottage Cheese. That recall required 1.2 million cases to be taken off the shelves or returned covering over 25 varieties.

The cottage cheese recall was also caused by incorrect storage temperatures from a particular supplier. One illness was reported in that recall.

There is a lot of technical aspects to making cheese that can remain edible far later than many people can believe. But no part of the process seems to be more difficult than temperature control.

Kraft foods is one of America’s largest food processing and beverages companies. The company has about $18 billion in revenues and 25,000 employees. Kraft holds a variety of well-known brands including Kraft, Capri Sun, Jell-O, Kool-Aid, Lunchables, Maxwell House, Oscar Mayer, Philadelphia, Planters and Velveeta.
