Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte Ingredients Raise More Than Eyebrows

It’s almost time for Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

The leaves will start to fall soon, the days will get colder and shorter, the smell of backyard fires will waft through the neighborhood, and you can get yourself a steaming cup of Caramel Color Level IV, Carrageenan stabilizer, and pesticide residue.

Wait a minute. What? Oh, I meant a Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte, but it includes all the handy-dandy cancerous chemicals listed above.

Recently, Vani Hari, AKA The Food Babe, did a little research into exactly what constitutes everyone’s favorite autumn coffee treat, the Starbucks’ Pumpkin Spice Latte. What she found more than raised her eyebrows.

Hari took the direct route in finding out what was in the drink — she asked Starbucks. Their answer?

“The Pumpkin Spice Latte is of pumpkin and traditional fall spice flavors combined with espresso and steamed milk, topped with whipped cream and pumpkin pie spice. If you ever have any questions or concerns in the future, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.”

Talk about a non-answer answer. Like any good detective, Hari wasn’t satisfied with the brush-off from Starbucks. She and the coffee company traded several emails back and forth before Starbucks finally told Hari that they weren’t going to spill the beans — (coffee or otherwise).

“While we understand that some customers would like to know the nutrition information for their specific customized beverage, unfortunately we are unable to provide this level of detail for every beverage customization request. The beverage information that is available on reflects the beverage offerings currently on our menu with the most common customization options.”

Another non-answer from Starbucks. The inability to get a straightforward response from Starbucks infuriated Hari. While does list the specific ingredients for a lot of their food items, it doesn’t the give complete list of ingredients for any of its drink items.

The Food Babe then decided to go to Starbucks’ online store and figure out all the individual products used to make the drinks and figure out what’s in those. She also utilized a personal contact she had at Starbucks to get a list of ingredients for the Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Two things.

First of all, between asking Starbucks employees for help and figuring it out on her own, Hari didn’t get the same results. Turns out the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte is made differently depending on where you live in the country.

Second of all, the ingredients she did find out about — from both sources — were more than a tad scary. The ingredients of the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte included but were not limited to:

Caramel Color Level IV – Made with ammonia and considered a carcinogen.

“Monsanto Milk:” Milk made with Carageenan stabilizer linked to intestinal inflammation and cancer.

Over 50 grams of sugar for a “Grande” — which is a medium.

Artificial flavors, preservatives and sulfites.

Possible pesticide residue from using non-organic coffee beans.
