Demi Lovato deeply regrets that she spent so many years feeling “ashamed” of her body.
Say what you will about the singer’s brand of music, Lovato is easily one of the coolest and most down-to-earth pop stars on the planet right now. If the 22-year-old has something on her mind, she’s going to say it. Period. This often includes reflections on her own life and career, and she’s not above calling herself out if need be.
According to ABC News, Demi took a moment to look back on some of the outfits she wore to the MTV Video Music Awards over the years. While Lovato admits that she cringes at some of the photos from back in the day, it’s not because of how she looks — it’s because she hates wasting so much time and energy dwelling on her appearance.
People explains that Demi began posting old photos from her previous red carpet appearances at the VMAs on Instagram. It was there that Lovato delved into her insecurities, revealing that those worries were ultimately a huge waste of time.
“This picture makes me feel so many mixed emotions. I remember the day I wore the dress in the very first picture. I remember asking for Spanx to flatten my stomach because I [used] to feel so heavy and ‘fat.’ Now looking at this picture, you can clearly see my hip bones. It makes me sad because I wasted so many years ashamed of my body when I could’ve been living the happy and healthy life I live today.”
