Miley Cyrus has vowed to stop the twerking onstage after Nicki Minaj’s MTV Video Music Awards performance Sunday night, according to the Mirror.
After being the talk of the entertainment world for her scandalous twerking – the act of shaking one’s bum up and down in a dance -with Robin Thicke during last year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Miley Cyrus seemed to “sex-up” each and every one of her ensuing shows. However, after seeing Nicki Minaj’s over the top, sexualized show segment this year, Miley Cyrus is hanging up her butt, so to speak.
Nicki Minaj’s video for her latest single, Anaconda (the song Minaj performed on the VMAs), broke the video server VEVO’s record for most views in a 24 hour period last week. The record Manaj broke was previously held by Miley Cyrus’s video for Wrecking Ball.
When asked about that record being broken and about Minaj’s performance at the VMA’s, Miley Cyrus said:
“With that ass… I ain’t got that ass. I can bring that body, I can bring that wrecking ball, but I can’t bring that ass. Not that anaconda. I’ve retired [from twerking], yeah. I’m making some music right now with the Flaming Lips. It’s different. It’s a little psychedelic.”
Just when you think you’ve got a read on what Miley Cyrus is doing, she goes and does something different. It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year of the former Hannah Montana star bouncing her bum, grabbing her crotch and licking her lips in ultra-revealing costumes on stage.
And according to the Times of India, she’s recording with the Flaming Lips?
For those not in the know, the Flaming Lips are a critically acclaimed alternative act that have been around since the early 1980’s. Though the band has never, ever shied away from controversy and has always pushed the musical envelope as far as they can, Miley Cyrus’s announcement that she’s working with them seems more than a bit odd as Cyrus represents the pinnacle of pop stardom. Of course, the term “odd” and the Flaming Lips have always gone hand in hand so maybe it makes sense.
Miley Cyrus spoke about concentrating on her music, and not so much on her persona:
“I live to be in the studio, that’s my favorite part, is hunkering down, working on a record. This record might take me five years. I don’t know. I’m just going to work on it until I’m done. It’s not about twerking – it’s about music.”
Reinvention has been a staple of every major pop matriarch of the last thirty years, from Madonna to Britney Spears. It seems as if Miley Cyrus is following in those very successful footsteps.
