Fox Releases 21 Minute ‘Gotham’ Preview

Gotham, Fox’s highly anticipated Batman prequel series, premieres less than a month from now, and the network has released a 21-minute preview to whet fan’s appetites.

The preview, which takes fans behind the scenes of Gotham, is titled “The Legend Reborn,” io9 notes. Divided into four parts on Fox’s YouTube channel, the video series reveals a first look at footage from Gotham beyond the pilot episode, which every previously released promo has relied on.

Show creator Bruno Heller praises star Ben McKenzie in the preview, according to The Wrap, saying he is the “perfect” actor to be cast as series lead Jim Gordon. According to Heller, McKenzie brings “natural integrity and strength” to Gotham, as well as “an old-fashioned set of values that really shines through his performance.” The preview also features the actors behind Detective Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), Oswald Cobblepot, better known as The Penguin (Robin Taylor), and the new character of Fish Mooney, played by Jada Pinkett Smith.

Gotham focuses on the origin story of many of the villains later to plague the DC comics universe. In addition to the Penguin, classic rogues gallery villains such as The Joker, Mr. Freeze, Riddler, Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Harvey Dent, Hugo Strange, and Sal Maroni are all thought to be appearing in Gotham’s first season, according to Batman News. Fans won’t get to see an established Batman in the series, which takes place during Bruce Wayne’s childhood, yet Gotham will explore a side of the Batman mythos that has largely been ignored on-screen.

Pinkett Smith says in the preview that she loves origin stories, relating that Gotham gives her “a playground for [her] shadow.” The character of Fish Mooney is new to the Batman universe, and has no counterpart outside of Gotham. A criminal mastermind in competition with the city’s established underworld, she is revealed in the preview to be the patron of the nascent Penguin, as The Inquisitr has previously reported.

According to Fox’s description, “‘Gotham’ traces the rise of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told.” Referencing the main character of Gordon, the network also says that “‘Gotham’ follows one cop, destined for greatness, as he navigates a dangerously corrupt city teetering on the edge of evil, and chronicles the birth of one of the most popular super heroes of our time.”

Gotham premieres on September 22.
