Trayvon Martin’s Family Joins Ferguson Protests

The family of Trayvon Martin is set to join the family of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri in order to show support for the Brown family’s cause. With the addition of Trayvon Martin’s parents, it seems obvious that the protests in Ferguson are now about more than one shooting in a small Missouri town.

Now that Trayvon’s family has joined what have been mostly peaceful protests, it’s pretty clear that Martin’s family, as well as many other families around the country, want the shooting of unarmed kids to stop.

There are a number of similarities to the shootings of Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin, and there appears to be a small segment of the population who claim both boys apparently deserved to be gunned down, despite not being armed themselves.

Tracy Martin, Trayvon’s father, has come from his Florida home in order to talk about shedding the label of “thug.”

BND.com reports the elder Martin got up to speak at the city’s Peace in the Neighborhood event, saying, “We have to educate our kids in the moral principals of being upstanding citizens. We have to educate them on the laws that apply to them directly and indirectly.”

Sybrina Fulton, Trayvon’s mother, is expected to join the protests as well on Sunday for one of the largest marches in Ferguson to date.

Earlier this week, Trayvon’s mom wrote a letter to Brown’s family, and the letter was featured on Time Magazine‘s website.

“Your circle will necessarily close tighter because the trust you once, if ever had, in ‘the system’ and their agents are forever changed,” Fulton wrote. “Your lives are forever changed… I know this because I lived and continue to live this.”

While Martin’s family joins the protests that are meant to bring justice to this small town, there have been some individuals who are stirring up violence. Those who are looking for peace in Ferguson continue to claim there is a small group of instigators that are giving the protests in general a bad name.

There is one big difference between the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown shooting at this point. When the Florida teen was gunned down his shooter was actually arrested and charged with a crime. Michael Brown’s killer is still walking free at this point.

Trayvon Martin’s parents, as well as most people in Ferguson, hope the Grand Jury will indict the Police Officer who shot Mike Brown.
