Battlefield 3’s multiplayer modes detailed

With the multiplayer beta set to kick off sometime this month, DICE is finally starting to share specifics on Battlefield 3‘s five gameplay modes available at launch.

In a post on the Battlefield Blog, DICE said that all five game modes will be available on all nine of the game’s maps – which is a bit of a relief, considering we had to wait for maps to be adapted to different game modes with Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

As for the modes themselves, DICE dropped quite a few details on how each one of them play and how many players are supported on each gametype.

First up is Team Deathmatch, which marks the gametype’s first appearance in a Battlefield title since the one that started it all, Battlefield 1942. As DICE puts it, Team Deathmatch is great for that “quick action fix.” The mode will support 24 players (12 vs. 12) across all platforms.

For Battlefield: Bad Company 2 players, Squad Deathmatch is nothing new – but, like Team Deathmatch, this marks the first time the mode has made its way into a core Battlefield title. Squad Deathmatch supports 16 players across all platforms, with teams being split up into 4.

The next mode, Rush, is also nothing new to anyone who played either Bad Company titles, but it’s yet another first in the core Battlefield series. It’s essentially the same as it was in Bad Company 2, with two sides taking turns attacking and defending M-COM stations, but with a few tweaks.

For starters, DICE made it so that explosives and weapons fire won’t be able to take down an M-COM station. Additionally, if the defenders attempt to disarm an M-COM station just as it’s about to blow, the timer will pause until either the bomb is successfully defused or the player defusing is killed. Rush will support 24 players on consoles, 32 on PC.

Squad Rush, which is essentially a light version of Rush, has two squads fighting over only two M-COM stations. There are only two total bases with M-COM stations, DICE explains, so the action is a lot more focused. Squad Rush supports 8 players (4 vs. 4) on all platforms.

Last but certainly not least is the mode that Battlefield is best known for: Conquest. The mode has two teams battling out for control of control points scattered across the map. Basically, the more control points your team holds, the better. Conquest will support 24 players on consoles, and between 32 and 64, depending on the server, on PC.
