Since appearing on Victorious, Ariana Grande has been typecast as a weird little teenage girl with the naivety of a toddler. Her role as Kat on Victorious, as well as on Sam and Kat, seems a perfect match to her squeaky voice and wandering mindset. At times, she seems lost in the world and it seems to come naturally to her, leaving many to wonder if she is just as spacey in real life. A recent interview in Billboard Magazine, Ariana Grande revealed that her inspirations are not what we might expect. Instead, a couple of her idols are Helena Bonham Carter and Freddy Kreuger.
Although the two icons of creepiness are idols of Ariana Grande, she also looks up to a prolific singer, Madonna.
“She is strength, she is freedom, she is wisdom beyond anybody’s comprehension.”
With so many young female artists mimicking the exploits of Madonna, gaining attention from her adolescent behavior of years past, and reemerging from the rubble as better women, some might wonder if Ariana Grande will follow the same path. However, her idolization of Freddy Kreuger and Helena Bonham Carter might coerce her to travel a different path. Instead of follow the same stale formula, we might assume that Ariana will go her own way to keep herself relevant and separate herself from the turmoil that so many young starts experience.
Ariana Grande recalls her fifth birthday, the theme was Jaws, and reveals that it was quite an experience.
“For my fifth birthday party we had a Jaws theme and all my friends left crying,”
She also reveled that her love of Freddy Kreuger was more than just an admiration of the movies he was in.
“I always wanted to have face paint on or be wearing a Freddy Krueger mask, and I would carry a hockey stick around.”
Due to her weirdness as a child, Ariana Grande feels that she was a “mini version” of Helena Bonham Carter. With just the right mix of creepiness and beauty, the young pop star may have found the perfect concoction for success and the perfect idols to model herself after. We will need to wait and see if her uniqueness will allow her to stand the test of time, or if she will fade off into some weird and nightmarish dreamscape if her fame ever fades, but for now she is rocking the charts and sharing her talents with fans across the globe.
