David Ortiz Joins 400 Homer Club

David Ortiz managed to forge himself another chapter in the Boston Redsox history books on Saturday night. The Boston Redsox slugger put himself in rare company when he blasted home run numbers 400 and 401 in a Boston uniform.

With those two homers, which allowed David Ortiz to also carry his team to a 10-7 win, the slugger put himself in a select group that only includes Ted Williams (521 home runs) and Carl Yastrzemski (452 homers)

“It’s an honor to be out there mentioned with those legends, legendary people that did an amazing job as long as they played with the Red Sox,” David Ortiz said after the game. “You come to this organization to play, and you’re not expecting your name to be mentioned right next to those guys. But it happens. You do what you got to do, and it’s the only way to get there.”

ESPN reports David Ortiz entered this rather elite club with a blast into the front row of seats in the third inning. Big Papi cemented the fact that he belonged in the club with another shot in the sixth inning.

David Ortiz wasn’t the only one who managed to get some hits for the Redsox but he certainly stood out, considering he also tied a career high for RBI in a game with six. Considering his team scored just four runs outside of his production, it’s pretty easy to call him the team’s MVP on Saturday.

Those six RBI allowed David Ortiz to reach another kind of career milestone. The slugger now has 91 runs batted in on the season. This year marks the 1oth time in 12 seasons with Boston that he’s topped the 90 RBI mark.

One other season, David Ortiz totaled 89 RBI and his one outlier with the Redsox is the year he missed quite a bit of time with injury and drove in just 60.

While Big Papi is synonymous with Boston these days, he actually spent his first six major league seasons with the Minnesota Twins and has 58 home runs with that organization.

The power hitter long ago passed another milestone as he now has 28 homers on the year. 2014 marks the 13th straight season David Ortiz has bashed 20 or more home runs in a season, a mark that has helped build his hall of fame credentials, according to most of his contemporaries.

While the hitter isn’t quite the player he was in his younger days, it appears David Ortiz is still going strong.
