As far as rivalries go, there is perhaps nothing on the planet that can beat the rivalry between the two south Asian countries of India and Pakistan. The kind of frenzied hatred the people of the two countries share for each other is legendary, and is perhaps little known to anyone who stays outside of the sub-continent. There have been instances of people dying of heart attacks if any of the countries loses a sporting event played against each other – usually Cricket. The two countries have fought four wars and Pakistan-fueled terrorism has claimed the lives of several Indians. Pakistan, on its part, also blames India for insurgencies within Pakistan. There is hardly any reason to love thy neighbor in this case.
The two south Asian countries are celebrating their 68th year of existence this week. Pakistan celebrates it on August 14 while India does the same on August 15. On the occasion of the Independence days of the two countries, a few YouTubers from both the countries decided to make this interesting video. They got hold of a few youngsters from both the countries and gave them all a phone to talk to a random stranger across the border. Instead of abuses and name calling, what resulted was what is shown in the video above. The fact that the makers of the video had to label who is Indian and who is Pakistani makes it clear how alike the people of both the countries are. Both the countries share similar culture, food, and habits, but always try hard to remain clear of each other – mainly due to the hatred spewed by politicians of either countries. It is perhaps in the interest of the politicians of both India and Pakistan that the people of the two countries continue hating each other.
Pakistan was carved out of the Hindu majority India in 1947 as a new state for the large number of Muslims living in the sub-continent. While India went on to become a plural, secular, and progressive democracy, Pakistan has been spiraling out of control thanks to over 40 years of military rule and the rising Jihadi elements from within. While the current scenario of peace prospects between the two nuclear powers look bleak, videos like these with sensible, intelligent youngsters can’t help but raise hopes of eternal peace between the two neighbors with the passing of each generation.
