‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 11: Is Meredith Dropping McDreamy For Alex Karev?

Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes already revealed that next season will be all about Meredith, but does this mean it’s the end of her marriage with Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd? Better yet — is she moving on with long time friend Alex Karev?

As a long time viewer of the show, I’m going to pump the breaks for a bit and say that, throughout its ten years, it was never questioned that Meredith Grey would ever hookup with Alex Karev, and that’s even while she was single and in her “dark and twisty phase.” So really, should we be questioning Meredith turning to Alex, especially when she’s finally a highly functioning adult with two children?

We shouldn’t, but we will say this — for the first time ever, Meredith is without her partner in crime, her person, Dr. Cristina Yang. We saw Yang’s departure, which was brilliant, and came with some sage words of advice for Meredith. In short: She told her not to let Derek’s needs eclipse her own. Flash forward to the couple arguing about moving from Seattle to D.C. so Derek can advance his career by working for the White House.

Now that Meredith is left without Cristina’s shoulder to lean on, does this mean she gets sloppy? According to TVLine, Rhimes said that Meredith will be a big wedge in Alex’s romance with Jo, but it isn’t what you think.

“Jo is going to be horrified to discover how much time Alex is going to be spending with Meredith, and how much time Meredith is going to be spending [at their] house.”

Although Meredith and Alex have been chummy before and consider each other as family, this is the first time that Meredith’s friendship with Alex is brought up as a real problem. Since it’s Grey’s Anatomy, we know that once there’s a problem it usually means there’s romance as well.

Fortunately, that doesn’t seem like it’s the case. According to Shonda, while Meredith will be a new fixture in Alex’s life, this is in no way going to turn into a romance.

“Alex feels responsible for her. He feels like Cristina didn’t just leave him a seat on the board and the shares, she left him Meredith as well.”

She continued:

“They’re the last men standing of those original interns. I wouldn’t say they’re becoming besties. [It’s more that] they’ve always had a very close relationship that didn’t ever need a lot of work because they always had a million other people there. Now, it’s sort of the two of them, and they do become closer.”

We can breathe now, right? Guess we’ll have to find out in September.
