Max Payne 3 still alive, coming next year

Max Payne 3 has been a long time coming. Originally scheduled for a winter 2009 release, the sequel was delayed into 2010, then 2011, then 2012. The title appeared to be stuck in development hell, and things looked rather grim for Max Payne 3.

If all that gloom had you worried that Max Payne 3 would never see the light of day, Rockstar dropped some news today that ought to cheer you up. According to the developer, Max Payne 3 is currently on track for a March 2012 release, adding that we’ll be hearing more soon.

“Max Payne 3 gave us an amazing creative opportunity to evolve one of our most iconic characters,” said Rockstar boss Sam Houser. “We’re excited to show fans a modern version of Max that pulls them back into his dark and twisted story.”

Max Payne 3 takes a decidedly different direction in comparison to the original two Max Payne titles, at least as far as style, tone and possibly narrative goes. Max Payne 3 is set several years after the second game, and sees Max, after leaving New York, acting as private security for a wealthy industrialist in San Paolo, Brazil whose family is threatened by local gangs.

In addition to taking the series in a new direction, Max Payne 3 will also introduce multiplayer to the series for the very first time. According to Rockstar, the mode will include your standard fare of competitive multiplayer modes in addition to clan support and a “deep reward and leveling system”.

Max Payne 3 is confirmed to release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
