The unwanted catcall. Nearly every woman has had a catcall directed her way from some dude she neither knows nor cares to know. A recent study in the U.K. found that 95 percent of women have been on the receiving end of an unwanted catcall when going about their routine daily business at some point.
And to paraphrase a common remark about a study of a another topic, the other five percent are lying.
Why women are forced to endure this routine and everyday sexual harassment is both puzzling and infuriating. What on Earth are men thinking when they shout something creepy or otherwise sexually suggestive at a woman they’ve ever seen before and, in most cases, will never see again. What’s in it for them?
This insightful video from our enlightened friends at BuzzFeed gives a rare look inside the minds of catcalling men. Frankly, while this video was designed to be funny, it may be too true to actually get laughs.
Watch the video and see what you think. If you’re a man, have you ever catcalled a woman on the street? If so, let us know why — and if you think this video is accurate?
And if you’re a woman, is your experience of being a catcall target anything like this?
