You, too, can be like Obi Wan Kenobi and use Jedi mind tricks to make anyone do pretty much anything you want. Within reason anyway. And, okay, you don’t have to be a Jedi knight to use these secret mind tricks. You just have to watch this amusing, but informative, video from the people at BuzzFeed who made us post this for them.
In all seriousness, the Force does not need to be with you. The mind tricks in this BuzzFeed video use some tried and true psychological techniques that are basically harmless, though maybe just slightly cynical. The tricks include, for example, “mirroring,” which is the technique of imitating the body language of the person you’re talking with.
In other words, cross your legs when he or she crosses his or her legs. If your conversation partner slouches slightly ii the chair, you should slightly a little yourself. And so on.
Subconsciously, this makes the other person feel comfortable around you and creates a sense that you empathize and understand the person’s feelings. Just — don’t be as obvious about it as the guy in this video.
Here’s another one you’ll see in the video — groupthink. You can call it “peer pressure” or a “herd mentality” but it all adds up to the same thing. Most people want to do what everyone else is doing, and no one wants to feel left out.
So if you need to persuade someone to do something like, say, go bowling after work rather than home to the wife and kids, get a group of people together and have them all tell this person that they’re going bowling too.
You’ll be amazed at how quickly people will agree to things they don’t really want to do — no matter how independent-minded they think they are.
